October Gratitude
October woods,
honeyed sunlight flowing,
and on every branch that endured
a single red lantern forms.
Time rinsed clean by the wind;
at the tip of a bent branch
an apple-colored longing hangs,
last summer’s sweat slowly ripening.
Branches of plenty,
branches of empty wind.
Beneath the same sky,
each autumn weighed on its own scale.
As every flower keeps its own season,
beneath the bare branch,
even in the deep dark under fallen leaves,
one green seed
beats quietly toward spring.
October evening:
when I fold my hands,
even in empty palms
a grain of warmth remains
like a pebble,
and the setting sun
falls asleep on the back of my hand.
Holding close what I have received,
I wait for dawn in gratitude.
