새벽이 오기 전 어둠 속에서
떡국 끓는 냄새가 피어오른다
하얀 김이 모락모락 천장을 적시고
조상의 혼백이 문지방을 넘어온다
한 해가 시작되는 이 아침
우리는 다시 한 살을 먹고
생명의 가지를 하나 더 뻗는다

마루에 둘러앉아 덕담을 나누니
할아버지 목소리에 불꽃이 일렁인다
“올해는 건강하게, 복 많이 받거라”
그 말 한마디 한마디가
얼어붙은 가슴을 녹이는 아궁이 불
웃음소리 터지고 손주들 뛰어다니니
이 집안이 온통 정(情)의 화롯불이로다
세배 올리는 법도가 있고
상 차리는 순서가 있고
나이 순서 자리 순서 엄하도다
이 모든 것이 부질없다 말하지 말라
혼돈 속에서 질서를 세우고
흐트러짐 속에서 중심을 잡는
우리네 의(義)로운 길이 여기 있으니

고향 가는 길은 멀고도 험하나
물은 언제나 근원으로 흐른다
혈육의 정, 고향의 정, 벗의 정
끊어질 듯 이어지고 마를 듯 다시 차오르는
이 오래된 인연의 물줄기여
세월이 흘러도 마르지 않고
대대로 흘러 바다를 이루리라

Before dawn breaks through the darkness
The scent of tteokguk rises, steaming white
Wisps of vapour climb toward the ceiling beams
And ancestral spirits cross the threshold
On this morning when the year begins anew
We grow one year older
Extending yet another branch of life

Gathered on the wooden floor, we exchange blessings
Grandfather’s voice flickers like flame
“Be healthy this year, receive many fortunes.”
Each word, each syllable
Melts the frozen hearts like fire in the hearth
Laughter erupts, and grandchildren run about
This house blazes with the fire of Jeong (정)
There is a proper way to bow for Sebae (세배)
There is an order to arrange the ritual table
Age order, seating order, strict and solemn
Do not say these things are meaningless
From chaos, we establish order
From disorder, we find our center
Here lies our righteous path of ui (義)

The road home is long and arduous
Yet water always flows toward its source
Bonds of blood, bonds of homeland, bonds of friendship
Nearly severed yet connected, nearly dry yet filling again
These ancient streams of connection
Though years flow by, they never run dry
Flowing through generations to become the sea
